Are dentures right for me?

Have you got one or more missing teeth?

Gapped teeth aren’t just unsightly but they can affect your ability to eat and talk, too.

Luckily, we offer several procedures at our St Helens dental practice that can help to restore missing natural teeth, including (but not limited to) removable dentures.

Typically, the best treatment option for you will depend on the location and how many missing teeth you have – not to mention your budget and personal preference.

To help you make an informed decision whether dentures are the perfect option for you, allow our dental professionals, here at Kiln Lane Dental, to talk you through the pros and cons.

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable false teeth.

Depending on the number of missing teeth you have, and whether they’re all on the top or bottom – or both – a dentist can provide partial or complete dentures.

Partial dentures consist of a plate and will have one or more replacement teeth attached to it. This simply clips onto your natural teeth and fills any gaps.

Complete dentures, on the other hand, consist of two full arches – one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth – providing patients with a full set of false teeth.

The pros of dentures:

  • Dentures look and feel just like natural teeth

It may take you some time to get used to your false teeth at first – but, after a few weeks, they will look and feel completely natural.

Nobody will be able to tell that they aren’t your real teeth, allowing you to regain confidence in your smile.

  • False teeth are a cost-effective solution

Dentures are one of the most affordable treatments for restoring missing teeth.

As the process is non-invasive, patients often don’t need anaesthetic or to book (and pay for) multiple appointments to check they’re mouth is healing properly.

  • Denture procedures are quick and easy

Before denture treatment, your dentist will need to take an impression of your gums and teeth to ensure a perfect (and comfortable) fit.

Once the moulds have been done, dentures can usually be made and fitted in as little as 2-6 weeks – meaning less time spent in the dentist’s chair!

  • A denture can provide support to a weak or sagging jaw

As you get older, you may notice that the muscles in your mouth and jaw become weaker.

However, dentures provide additional support for your facial muscles – preventing your cheeks from looking hollow and giving your mouth and jaw a natural look.

  • False teeth are suitable for everyone

Whilst implants are typically suited to patients with healthy gums and strong jaws, dentures are a feasible option for everyone – even if your teeth and jaw aren’t in good shape.

Admittedly, your dentist will need to advise you about what food you can eat while wearing your dentures, and you’ll need to cut it up into smaller pieces, but dentures can enhance your smile while helping you to eat and speak with confidence – no matter how old you are.

The cons of dentures

  • Dentures are not a permanent solution for tooth loss

Over time, dentures can wear down and the shape of your jaw can change as you get older. Therefore, you will need to pop in to see your dentist and enquire about a replacement, usually every 5-8 years.

Fortunately, the process of modifying dentures is much more straightforward than replacing implants.

  • False teeth require an adjustment period

Initially, you may find it difficult to get used to your dentures and it may affect your speech and the taste of your food.

However, your dentist will be able to offer strategies to help you adjust to them quickly – including simple things like taking your time when eating and practising speaking while wearing them.

  • You may experience some discomfort from wearing dentures

Ill-fitting or improperly used dentures can result in yeast infections. This happens when yeast accumulates in the moisture-rich areas of your mouth, so you must remove them regularly for cleaning.

Dentures can cause sore gums and the bone underneath your dentures can start to deteriorate. If they begin to irritate your gums and teeth, leading to an allergic reaction or abscesses, it’s worth seeking advice from your dentist.

  • Dentures might slip when you talk or eat

As they’re removable, it’s not uncommon for them to slip out of place – usually when you smile, laugh, cough, talk or eat. But when you’re eating your lunch with colleagues or chatting with friends, it’s the last thing you want to happen.

Luckily, there’s a quick fix to the problem. Gently reposition them by biting down and swallowing or use a denture adhesive to hold them in the appropriate place. If the problem persists, consult your dentist as your dentures may need adjusting to provide a snug fit.
